Vasai Fort, historically known as Bassein, was the headquarters of the Portuguese in northern India and an important naval and shipbuilding centre. The extensive fort walls, bastions, churches, ruins, gates and other structures remain as evidence of its former importance. The fort is also associated with the Treaty of Bassein and the Maratha conquest under Chimaji Appa.
